Impact of Disposable Coffee Cups on the Environment

Impact of Disposable Coffee Cups on the Environment

About 1 million disposable cups end up in different landfills around the world every minute which leads to 500 billion every year. You can calculate how many of those cups will be disposed by the time you finish reading this article. Many of us have made it a routine to buying coffee before we go to work that we have lost count of how many disposable cups we drink from and then throw them out. Studies show that around 90% of these cups end up in landfills. After plastic bottles, disposable cups are currently second largest contributor to litter waste globally. If you are not conscious of the environmental issues and you don’t have reusable coffee cup, you can now start tossing your disposable coffee cups into the recycling bin and perhaps go ahead to the effort of separating that cup from its lid.

Despite the large volumes of litter, most of these disposable cups have plastic coating known as polythene, which means they cannot be easily composted or recycled. Furthermore, there is risk of cancer-causing chemicals leaching from the polythene into your sweet hot coffee. The plastic coating is supposed to make the paper cup more durable and have better insulation.

It is imperative to note that the environmental threats of these disposable coffee cups actually begin before they are even used. Remember, paper production leads to deforestation, which then causes ecosystem degradation and decrease the absorption capacity of carbon. Also, through transport and manufacture, paper cup industries around the world releases 55 billion pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. This is equivalent to one year of emissions from 5270 passenger vehicles.

As concerns about sustainability increase, there are two solutions available to the environmentally conscious individuals. First is the use of bioplastic coatings instead of using the conventional plastics. The second solution is simple and easy to achieve; using your reusable cup instead of disposable. This is the most effective way in sustaining the environment. At Biopak, we have achieved both solutions by offering you with coffee cups that are both reusable and manufactured using bioplastic. There are coffee shops that will offer you a discount if you bring your own reusable cup.

It is our responsibility to make changes in our demands and behavior in ways that will benefit the environment positively. We shouldn’t normalize our ecosystem degradation or carbon footprint regardless of living in a world where we fill the air with carbon dioxide and cut down forests to make way for landfills. When we realize our unsustainable behavior, it will be easier for us to start replacing the seemingly harmless disposable cup with bioplastic reusable cups like the ones provided by Biopak.

The bioplastic used to make BioCups is a renewable material made from plant resources and not oil. They are beautiful, healthier and more sustainable alternative to conventional melamine and plastic.
